His Eye Is on the Sparrow
This painting began with a hymn that has a way of finding you in quiet moments—His Eye Is on the Sparrow. A song about being seen. About being held when life feels uncertain, or tender in ways you don’t always have language for.
At the center of the work is a nest resting on a strong branch beneath an open sky. It is simple, ordinary, and still—yet it carries the weight of care. Within the nest are fragments of the hymn itself, as if the words have settled there over time:
“His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”
Around it, textured flowers grow along the branch. Not overly perfect or arranged, but present—like creation continuing its quiet work. They hold both beauty and the reminder that joy and sorrow often exist in the same frame.
Cool coastal blues and soft greens move through the painting like breath. They don’t demand attention. Instead, they make space. Space to notice. Space to remember.
After my father passed last year, my thoughts naturally turned toward Heaven. Not in a distant or abstract way, but in the very real ache of missing someone I love. In that season, all the songs I heard seemed to make me want to leave this imperfect home and go and join Dad and My Savior.
Then this hymn popped into my head. One line stayed with me in particular:
“Why should my heart be lonely And long for heav’n and home, When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He.”
I found myself sitting with a quiet tension that softened into reflection. “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” — Psalm 27:13
This verse became something to hold onto—not as a dismissal of grief or longing, but as a reminder that goodness is not only ahead of us. It is also still unfolding here.
This piece lives in that in-between space. Between heaven and earth. Between absence and presence. Between what is deeply missed and what is still being given.
And within it, the quiet assurance remains: nothing is unseen. Not the sparrow. Not the heart that carries both grief and gratitude at the same time.
