Inspired by the beloved hymn It Is Well with My Soul, this painting is a visual prayer of peace, surrender, and enduring hope.
The story behind this hymn is as powerful as the words themselves. In 1873, American attorney and businessman Horatio Spafford experienced unimaginable loss. After the Great Chicago Fire devastated much of his property and business interests, he planned a trip to Europe with his wife, Anna, and their four daughters. At the last moment, a business matter required him to remain behind while his family sailed ahead.
Tragedy struck when their ship, the Ville du Havre, collided with another vessel in the Atlantic and sank. All four of their daughters were lost. Anna survived and sent her husband a brief telegram: "Saved alone."
Spafford immediately sailed across the Atlantic to join his grieving wife. As his ship passed near the place where his daughters had died, he is believed to have written the words that would become one of the most beloved hymns of the Christian faith:
"When peace like a river attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say,
It is well, it is well with my soul."
The hymn's message is not that life is always peaceful or that sorrow does not hurt. Rather, it is a declaration of faith in the midst of suffering—a quiet confidence that even when the waters rise, God remains faithful.
